What to Look for in a Clothes Steamer: Buying Guide

Choosing a steamer comes down to a handful of specifications. Here is what each one means and how to weigh them.

Handheld or full-size?

Handheld steamers are compact, heat quickly and suit travel and small wardrobes. Full-size steamers have larger tanks and a pole, so they run longer and suit a household's weekly laundry.

Power (watts)

Higher wattage generally means faster heat-up and stronger steam. Around 1,500W and above is typical for good performance on heavier fabrics.

Water tank size

Small tanks (under 100ml) give a few minutes of steam, enough for touch-ups. Larger tanks (1L+) let you steam several garments without refilling.

Heat-up time

Compact models heat in under a minute; larger ones may take a little longer. Faster heat-up matters if you steam daily.
